Founded in 2021 by David McKean Newson (he/him), Fenh was born out of a love for art, fashion and photography.
Why did you create the menswear brand Fenh?
To have something that belonged to myself and to my partner. Something that is truly ours that we can use to amplify the things we believe in and potentially one day work for ourselves.
What was your main objective(s) when you engaged with Dynamic Unicorns?
All around business advice. I had seen the amazing work they had done for the brand ISE and knew it would be an invaluable asset to Fenh.
How did Dynamic Unicorns help you achieve your objective(s)?
There are things I would have never known without their help. For example; how to properly set up a burn rate, what details go into pre product etc, the list goes on and on. Overall they have been an amazing source of support and encouragement.
Describe a "win" for Fenh?
We haven't had any big wins yet as we are pre-launch, but I would say a small win would be getting our schedule right and finding time to work on the business. Without the conversations we've had with Gabrielle, we would never have had that a-ha! moment that has led us to being able to balance our schedules.
The foundations wouldn't be what it is with the help from Dynamic Unicorns. They've really helped us lay a foundation for things to come.
Fenh will be launching in March 2023.
House of ISÉ is an online luxury lifestyle destination, providing sustainable products for the home including their own brand ISÉ, which produces organic bed linen and sustainable leather throws.
Supporting established and emerging brands who fit in with the brands values and ethos, ISÉ collaborations include Alicja Podgorska Birnker - stoneware ceramics and Art magazine.
Why did you create House of ISÉ?
I always had a passion to start something of my own and I was at a stage in my life where my home became a place of importance for me. With my strong stance on sustainability, quality and my love of design, I created ISÉ: pieces for the home, starting in one of the most important rooms in the house - the bedroom, where sleep plays a big part in our lives. So far, I have designed a line of timeless bed linen pieces, made from a very high grade of certified organic linen from Belgium, and a low impact woven leather throw from Italy.
What was your main objective(s) when you engaged with Dynamic Unicorns?
To create my products and launch my business.
I have over a decade of experience in the fashion industry, so designing was a skill that I have. I understood the production process and lots of other aspects of the manufacturing side of things but when it came to the nitty gritty of running a business and having to do costing sheets, implementing a marketing plan, looking at profit margins, inventory, shipping, website design, etc, I just didn’t have those skills, nor the breadth of knowledge. Gabrielle was instrumental in guiding and educating me through this process. Some of the areas I felt comfortable in, I found was very different when you looked at it from a business standpoint. I have grown and learnt so much since engaging with Dynamic Unicorns.
How did Dynamic Unicorns help you achieve your objective(s)?
With so many moving parts, things become overwhelming quickly. Gabrielle broke everything down to help me focus on one thing at a time and create timelines for when we expected to have things done. We set a launch date I could aim toward and that helped make it real in my mind. It was comforting to know that I had someone there to keep me accountable and also know that if I had any questions or was confused, that she would be there to work through it with me. Not only was Gabrielle a great source of knowledge with her expertise, but she was also approachable and now a great friend. She was there when I needed her through the tough times - all my breakdowns and stressful moments. She is a great listener and always offered me encouragement and words of wisdom to pick me up again.
The service was set up so that I would check in once a week to tell her how I was going and ask any questions for the task that was set. This also held me accountable to my deadlines. We would then have a bigger catch up once a month to check off milestones. This was helpful to keep me accountable to my deadlines and also from a big-picture perspective, see the progress I was making to get to that launch date. It felt unreal when I launched, and I have Gabrielle to thank for getting me to the finish line. I couldn’t have done it without her incredible support through the years.
Describe a "win" for House of ISÉ?
Pressing the “launch” button was a big win. It was quite the journey to get to that point, so it was huge for me.
Other goals were to get a write up in Broadsheet, a Sydney online publication, and have my products showcased in Vogue - and it happened! Those were very proud moments for me.
I would highly recommend getting a mentor like Gabrielle to guide you through your journey. I could have done it on my own but I know it would not have been done with all the right tools in place to make my business successful and set up to scale in future. Thank you Gabrielle, you are an asset to anyone lucky enough to work with you. The journey continues!
